Introduction:

Phired Reviewers: A beginners guide to databases, written by me, Phired. A zipfile containing all the files and the database created with this tutorial can be downloaded here.

Have you ever wondered how big companies manage to update their websites so quickly? Have you ever wanted to know how to make a message or bulletin board? Well now you can, using a database.

What is a database?

A Database is a collection of data which has been organized in some way. Examples of databases you may use daily include:
  • a telephone book
  • T.V. Guide
  • papers in your filing cabinet
  • files on your computer hard drive
A computerized database usually stores information in tables, which are split up into fields, the data stored in fields are records:

Fields: Name Phone Number Address
Records: Jane Smith 0192 918 918273 19 Rotten Avenue
Records: Joe Bloggs 0123 123 123456 12 Highway Street
Records: John Doe 0987 987 987654 98 Sessle Drive

As you can see, above shows the layout of a simple database that could be used as an address book. The field names are Name, Phone Number and Address and the records are the cells below the fields; 'Joe Bloggs' is a record as is '0123 123 123456' and '12 Highway Street'. Databases excel at managing and manipulating information structured as above. Another thing to note is that the records are sorted alphabetically by the name field, this makes the name field the key field.
